Case Study

Offshore Wind-to-Hydrogen Hub

Client

Major European Integrated Utility

Area

North Sea

Context

The client was planning an offshore wind hub with large‑scale electrolysis in a congested North Sea grid. Leadership needed clarity on how the project should fit within the wider portfolio, which industrial customers to target and how evolving EU policy and support schemes might shape value.

Action

Viera Consulting linked planned offshore wind capacity to credible industrial demand in Northern Europe and examined different commercial pathways for the hub. Work covered analysis of grid constraints and connection options, review of potential hydrogen offtakers, and assessment of regulatory and subsidy mechanisms under the European Green Deal and Fit for 55.

Impact

The board received a clear view of viable routes‑to‑market, pricing and offtake models, and the policy conditions needed for investment. This allowed the client to position the hub as a strategic transition asset within its portfolio and to structure engagement with regulators and system operators around a focused set of options.
